The Allagash Wilderness Waterways is truly a jewel of the North Maine Woods. The immense history of the Allagsh River corridor dates back to the 1800s and is centered around Maine's rich logging past, remnants of which still remain today. The attraction of the Allagash does not end with its robust forest and abundant wildlife, as it is also one of only four rivers in the world to run due north. Furthermore, it is also a path traveled by Henry David Thoreau and the first river corridor to be designated and protected as a Wild & Scenic River in America. The combination of large glimmering lakes and swift moving river offers one of the best opportunities in the country for an extended canoeing and camping experience. With intermittent white water (class I-II) and beautiful campsites makes the Allagash well suited for paddlers of all ages and skill levels, and ideal opportunity for families and friends to experience the Great North Woods.

The Saint Croix is perhaps Maine's  Best Choice, if not the only Choice, for a relaxed extended canoe trip, with whitewater in the middle of summer season and into the fall. One of Maine's true gems, the St Croix waterways start in an extensive chain of wilderness lakes, and flows through exceptionally beautiful woodlands and vast natural meadows along the Canadian border. Once used for driving log - through the remote forested reaches of easternmost Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick, the outstanding natural values of the Saint Croix Waterway, has led to its protected status as a "Canadian Heritage River". Noted as one of the few nesting areas for the American Bald Eagle, it also has a significant moose population, and boasts superb smallmouth bass fishing. The river features an abundance of easy whitewater ( I - II+), scenic secluded campsites, an easy pace, and excellent cuisine. Lively but not intimidating it can be enjoyed by a wide range of canoeists, from beginner to expert. It is ideal for teaching technique - especially solo paddling and poling - or for those simply seeking a relaxed and tranquil river trip.
